The Ikota Housing Estate (IHE) Garbage Management Project

Bringing Cleanliness and Relief to Ikota Housing Estate

ACHE is pleased to announce the commencement of its community charity project under the Earthworks initiative, focusing on waste management for the Ikota Housing Estate (IHE) community in Ikota, Eti-Osa LGA, Lagos. This project addresses a critical need within the community, where waste accumulation has become a serious concern over the past two years.

The Community and Its Challenges:

Home to over 24,000 residents in approximately 17,000 households, Ikota Housing Estate spans an area of about 36 hectares (coordinates: 6.4503° N, 3.5534° E), nestled between Ikota Villa Estate and Ilaje, directly opposite the prestigious Victoria Garden City Estate. The community is a blend of artisans, retirees, and their families living in a modest environment of brick buildings and shanty homes. Its narrow dirt roads form a network bustling with street markets, artisan shops, and small stores, giving the community its unique and lively atmosphere.

For many years, IHE relied on the Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) for garbage clearance. However, about two years ago, the community became unable to afford the service, leading to the buildup of waste at public sites and along the roads. This has created a significant health and environmental concern for the residents, and there was an urgent need for intervention.

ACHE’s Intervention:

In response, ACHE engaged with RICO Clean Environmental Services, the local LAWMA provider, to identify areas in severe need of waste management support. Ikota Housing Estate was quickly highlighted as a community in desperate need of intervention. With a deep sense of commitment, ACHE partnered with the IHE Executive Committee (EXCO) to develop a solution. This partnership was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on September 8, 2025, between ACHE and the IHE EXCO.

Project Goals and Progress:

The Ikota Housing Estate Garbage Management Project officially commenced on September 20, 2025, with regular bi-weekly community garbage cleanups. ACHE has taken on the responsibility of restoring cleanliness to the streets and public spaces of IHE, working in close collaboration with the community’s leadership. The aim is not only to clear the accumulated waste but also to establish a sustainable system that will ensure long-term cleanliness and health for the community.

Looking Ahead:

Our work in Ikota Housing Estate is just the beginning. ACHE is committed to providing continued waste management support to this beleaguered yet resilient community. We also aspire to extend similar assistance to other communities in Eti-Osa LGA facing the same challenges.

We express our deepest gratitude to our partners, stakeholders, and supporters who have made this project possible, and we look forward to welcoming new supporters in the future. Together, we are making a real difference in improving the living conditions and environmental health of Ikota Housing Estate and beyond.

Thank you, and may God bless everyone involved in this important mission.
